According to glavcom.ua: John Sandoski from the Sandia National Laboratories (USA) is developing a new method for asteroid detection using heliostats – solar mirrors that are typically used for electricity generation. These heliostats can detect faint light reflected from objects near Earth, which will aid in the timely detection of potential threats from asteroids.

During the experiment, the scientist used 212 heliostats from the National Solar Thermal Test Facility. Sandoski measured the speed of asteroids in relation to stars, allowing significant time and resource savings compared to traditional telescopes.

Heliostats, which are usually not used at night, can become a valuable and efficient tool in detecting faint light reflected from objects near Earth. This will enable the timely identification of potential threats from asteroids.

The researcher also noted the potential of this system for defense purposes, particularly for tracking spacecraft in hard-to-monitor lunar regions. The study shows that this method could be effective in detecting asteroids and predicting possible collisions with them in the future.
