According to hvylya.net: Geography teacher Andriy Utkin shared his concern that in 2025 none of his graduates chose geography during the national multi-subject test. According to the teacher, this indicates a crisis of this subject in the Ukrainian education system.

'Children love geography, are curious in classes, ask questions, participate in projects, discuss global challenges. However, when choosing the NMT, they do not follow their own interests, but think about the requirements for admission to universities,'

- explained Utkin.

The teacher also noted that the root of the problem is not low interest in geography, but the admission system to universities. He believes that geography is often perceived as a less important subject, reducing it to memorizing capital names and studying contour maps, while ignoring spatial logic and global processes.

'It is reduced to capital names and contour maps, instead of teaching spatial logic, critical thinking, understanding global processes,'

- noted the educator.

Utkin believes that as long as there are no changes in the attitude towards geography in the education system, programs and results will not reflect the true picture.

The educator expressed concern that students make decisions about subject choices for admission testing not based on personal interests, but on the needs of the admission campaign. Such an attitude leads to the problem of choosing geography, which the teacher considers key for developing global thinking and understanding the world.
