The Impact of War on Aging in Ukraine's Population

According to Главком: Research from the Dmytro Chebotariov Institute of Gerontology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine reveals the severe impact of the ongoing war on the nation's aging process. In an interview with the publication 'Hlavkom,' Dr. Valentyna Chyzhova, Head of the Department of Pharmacotherapy for Age-Related Diseases and a Doctor of Medical Sciences, stated that the conflict has significantly accelerated aging among Ukrainians.

The study found that for many individuals, their biological age now exceeds their chronological age by 10 to 15 years. Dr. Chyzhova noted that while population aging is a global trend, the pace in Ukraine is dramatically faster.

"Indeed, the general trend is that the world is aging-there's even the phrase 'a gray planet' now, meaning there are more and more people aged 80+ on Earth. But the rate of aging is crucial. If developed countries experience slow aging, ours is rapid, happening here and now under the influence of stress factors related to the war,"

the scientist emphasized.

Factors Contributing to Accelerated Aging

Aging is influenced not only by stress but also by nutrition. Dr. Chyzhova pointed to the rapid aging caused by protein glycation, which results from an excess of sugars and fats in food. She also noted that aging is intensified by the combination of stress with the accumulation of free radicals in cells and altered endothelial function.

  • One recommendation for older adults is increased protein intake, which can positively influence aging processes.

Thus, the war's effect on the aging of Ukrainians presents a serious challenge requiring attention from both the scientific community and society at large. This phenomenon is a stark example of how sustained trauma and hardship can have measurable physiological consequences. Raising awareness of the factors that promote aging could help implement necessary measures to improve quality of life during wartime.

The research underscores that under war conditions, Ukrainians face heightened stress and unhealthy lifestyle factors, leading to faster biological aging. This could have long-term consequences not only for individuals but for the country's healthcare system as a whole. In this context, it is vital to develop support programs for the elderly and conduct active educational efforts to improve their physical and mental well-being.

The ongoing conflict not only accelerates the aging process but also highlights the importance of innovative therapies for those affected. For instance, canine therapy has emerged as a beneficial approach to support wounded soldiers, addressing both physical and psychological challenges they face. This connection underscores the multifaceted impact of war on health, prompting the need for comprehensive strategies to mitigate its effects on the aging population.
