After 86 Days Saving Wounded at Azovstal, Military Medic Dies in Captivity
The Story of Medic Oleksandr Ivantsov
According to Міністерство Здоров'я: A military medic who spent 86 days treating over a thousand wounded defenders at the Azovstal steel plant has died in Russian captivity. This is the story of Oleksandr Ivantsov.
Oleksandr Ivantsov's life stands as a testament to unwavering dedication and heroism. Born on February 6, 1969, in Cherkasy, he graduated with honors from the Cherkasy Medical College in 1988. He then passed the selection process for elite forces and began serving in an airborne assault unit. In 2016, Ivantsov joined the Azov Regiment, and by 2019, he was leading the unit's medical service.
Ivantsov established the Zaliznyaka hospital within the Azovstal plant, working there for 86 days. During this period, the facility treated more than a thousand injured soldiers. Despite constant danger and grueling conditions, he continued saving lives without rest. Mykyta Nadtochii, deputy commander of the 1st Corps of the National Guard's Azov unit, described the situation:
“The stabilization points at Azovstal were hell on earth. Under the most horrific conditions, Kroha worked for 86 days, pushing through exhaustion to keep saving lives. He was a superhuman example.”
Tragically, after leaving Azovstal, Oleksandr was taken into Russian captivity. He was held in Olenivka, Taganrog, and Pre-Trial Detention Center No. 2 in Kamyshin. During his time at Azovstal, he lost 20 kilograms. Oleksandr Ivantsov, known by the call sign Kroha, died while in captivity. His body was returned to Ukraine in September 2025 as part of a repatriation process for fallen soldiers.
Remembering Oleksandr
His daughter, Sofia, remembers him fondly: “Since childhood, I recall him as open and sociable. He could bring people together, joked often, had a great sense of humor, and was always ready to help. What I miss most is his sincere, contagious laughter.” In late May, when Oleksandr was taken into captivity, he reassured his family, saying everything would be fine and that they would see each other soon.
Eternal and bright memory to Oleksandr Ivantsov. Eternal memory to all those whose lives were taken by Russia.
