Vilnius extends free transport for Ukrainians until 2026: new conditions
Free transport for Ukrainian refugees in Vilnius
According to ХВИЛЯ: The Vilnius City Council has extended free transport on public transport for Ukrainian refugees until 2026, introducing new rules for the future. According to the council's decision, the old transport rules will remain in effect until March 1, 2026, after which changes will be implemented.
From March 1 to August 31, 2026, there will be a transitional period during which Ukrainian refugees will be able to use free transport under the old rules. However, starting from September 1, 2026, free transport will be possible only with the presence of a special personalized electronic ticket. This ticket will be issued by the municipal enterprise 'Transport Services' (JUDU).
Obtaining a new personalized electronic ticket
To obtain a new personalized electronic ticket, Ukrainians will need to present a digital residence permit and a Ukrainian passport. The validity period of the new ticket is set until December 31, 2026. Thus, the provision of free transport for Ukrainian refugees in Vilnius will continue, but with new conditions that will come into effect in the coming years.
This decision of the Vilnius City Council demonstrates support and adaptation to the needs of Ukrainian refugees who have left their country due to the war.
Free transport on public transport is an important aspect of social integration and facilitates access for Ukrainians to necessary services and resources in Lithuania. With the new conditions that will come into effect in 2026, the authorities aim to ensure control over the provision of social services to refugees, which, in turn, may affect their adaptation in a new environment.
