A Radiation Jet Points Straight Toward Our Planet

According to НВ — Техно: On October 8 at 08:03, astronomers announced the groundbreaking detection of the microblazar IRAS 18293−0941-the first ever identified within the Milky Way. This discovery was made possible through the combined efforts of an international team of scientists from Spain, the Netherlands, and Argentina. Their findings were published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. The microblazar consists of a binary system made up of a black hole and a hot star, whose interaction produces powerful plasma jets.

Key Features of the Microblazar

Located approximately 12,000 light-years away, IRAS 18293−0941 features a black hole orbiting a hot star every 11 days. Gas from the star is ejected as two opposing jets, with one jet uniquely aligned toward Earth. Observations were conducted using Spain's Calar Alto Observatory, the European VLBI network of radio telescopes, and the MeerKAT antenna array in South Africa.

This microblazar emits energy across a broad spectrum and includes a heated region behind the jet where it collides with interstellar gas. Researchers attribute the absence of rapid brightness fluctuations to the smoothing effect of a dense gas cloud enveloping the black hole.

“This is the first time in history that we have a truly strong candidate for a microblazar, as their active phase is very short, making such systems incredibly difficult to find,” said Josep Martí.

Discovering IRAS 18293−0941 marks a significant advancement in understanding microblazars and their role in the cosmic environment, especially regarding the space radiation that reaches Earth. Studying these rare objects sheds light on the formation and evolution of cosmic phenomena and how they interact with their surroundings. This breakthrough also highlights the vital role of international collaboration and cutting-edge technology in unraveling complex astronomical mysteries.

In addition to this groundbreaking discovery, researchers are also exploring the mysteries of the universe through innovative projects. For instance, British scientists have recently developed a microsatellite aimed at investigating the cosmic dark ages that preceded the formation of the first stars. This initiative could provide valuable insights into the early universe, complementing our understanding of phenomena like microblazars.
