Kyiv has started receiving new low-floor PTS trolleybuses T12309. This is the first delivery of new vehicles for the capital since the beginning of the full-scale war and effectively the first update of the trolleybus fleet in the last five years. This was reported by the specialized publication Alltransua.

New PTS trolleybuses for Kyiv purchased for over 300 million hryvnias

In total, the capital is set to receive 16 new trolleybuses, which were purchased by KP 'Kyivpastrans' from the company 'PolitehnoService'.

The contract between the parties was signed on January 26, 2026. The total amount of the contract was 306.2 million UAH. Thus, one trolleybus cost the city approximately 19.1 million UAH.

The new vehicles are 12-meter low-floor PTS trolleybuses T12309, built on the chassis of the Turkish company Akia. The control system for them was developed by the Ukrainian manufacturer 'PolitehnoService'.

PTS trolleybuses have autonomous drive and low floor

One of the key features of the new trolleybuses is the autonomous drive system. It allows the vehicle to travel up to one kilometer without the contact network.

This enables it to bypass emergency areas or continue operating during brief power outages.

The vehicles also feature a fully low floor, making it easier for people with disabilities, passengers with baby strollers, and elderly individuals to board.

Kyiv's trolleybus fleet needs extensive updating

The last new trolleybuses Kyiv received were back in January 2021. At the same time, experts emphasize that the current batch only partially covers the city's demand for public transport upgrades.

Over the past decade, the number of operational trolleybuses in the capital has significantly decreased, and a substantial portion of the vehicles has already exceeded a 10-year service life.

Despite ongoing major repairs, Kyiv's public electric transport system requires significantly more extensive modernization. Meanwhile, the current delivery is considered a positive signal for the gradual restoration of vehicle procurements even amid wartime conditions.

Let us remind you that the public organization 'Passengers of Kyiv' has presented a new fare payment concept for municipal transport in the capital. According to the new proposals, there will be a move away from paying for each entry; instead, tickets valid for a certain period will be introduced. A basic ticket for 45 minutes is proposed to be set at 20 UAH, a 90-minute ticket will cost 30 UAH, and a daily pass is planned to be introduced for 80 UAH.
