Pollution in the port of Chornomorsk: consequences of enemy shelling and remediation measures
Situation in the 'Yuzhny' Port
According to Главком: The 'Yuzhny' port is open for the entry and exit of vessels, however, pollution in the form of oily spots has been recorded in the waters of the 'Chornomorsk' port. This pollution is a result of an enemy attack that led to the burning of containers with flour and vegetable oil in the 'Yuzhny' port. Combustion products and vegetable oil have entered the waters of the Black Sea, raising concerns about the ecological situation.
Measures to eliminate pollution
To mitigate the consequences of pollution, the port channel has been blocked with two layers of floating barriers. This helps to reduce the spread of pollutants in the water. The waters of the 'Yuzhny' port have also been temporarily closed until the full elimination of the vegetable oil leak. The measures taken aim to minimize negative impacts on the ecology and ensure the safety of navigation in the region.
The situation in the 'Chornomorsk' port emphasizes the seriousness of the threats posed by enemy shelling to the environment and the safety of maritime transport in Ukraine. Eliminating the consequences of pollution is a priority task for preserving marine ecosystems, as well as ensuring the uninterrupted functioning of port infrastructure. It also reflects the broader picture of the conflict's impact on the environment in the region, which requires attention from both local and international organizations.
