According to Главком: Major Serhii Sapsai of Ukraine's State Border Guard Service was killed in action on March 19, 2026, during a hostile attack. He served as deputy chief of the strike and reconnaissance unmanned aerial systems unit for the 10th Mobile Border Guard Detachment, 'Dozor'. The incident occurred at night near the border in the Sumy region, when an armored Ford Ranger vehicle was struck by an enemy drone. Three other service members were wounded in the attack.

The Life and Service of Serhii Sapsai

Serhii Sapsai was born on November 5, 1987, in Poltava. He graduated from the Poltava V.G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University in 2011, qualifying as a teacher of history and law. In 2018, he earned a law degree from the Open International University of Human Development 'Ukraine'. He completed officer training courses at the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine in 2019.

Sapsai began his contract service with the Border Guard in 2006. In 2015, he participated in the Anti-Terrorist Operation as part of a mobile group from the 10th Mobile Border Guard Detachment. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, he was stationed on the border with Belarus, tasked with covering the regrouping of main Ukrainian forces and ensuring the evacuation of civilians from the city of Pripyat. In March 2022, he served with the Kyiv Defense Forces in the Novi Petrivtsi and Moshchun sectors, and from September to November 2022, he was deployed in the area of Enerhodar city and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

From November 2023 to June 2024, Major Sapsai took part in the defense of the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions, as well as in assault operations on the Bakhmut and Horlivka fronts, defending Avdiivka and Kupiansk. From April to May 2024, he was engaged in the management, planning, and deployment of strike drone crews. On May 11, 2024, in the village of Hatyshche on the eastern outskirts of Vovchansk, he organized the defense of positions for a composite unit.

For his service, Serhii Sapsai was awarded two presidential honors: for participation in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (2016) and for the defense of Ukraine (2022). He also received a medal for 10 years of faithful service (2016), and the badges 'Excellent Border Guard' (2016) and 'For Courage in Guarding the State Border' (2022). He was posthumously awarded the Order 'For Courage' III Class (Presidential Decree No. 490/2025, July 7, 2025) and posthumously promoted to the military rank of Major.

Serhii Sapsai is survived by his mother, wife, two daughters, and a brother. A highly skilled soldier, he mastered a wide array of demanding military specialties, including dog handler, grenade launcher operator, machine gunner, sniper, and aerial reconnaissance specialist, demonstrating unwavering dedication and bravery in defending Ukraine. His death underscores the immense personal sacrifice demanded by the ongoing war, where frontline units face constant threats from advanced weaponry like attack drones.
