In Ukraine, firefighters celebrate Fire Protection Day on April 17 and Rescuer Day on September 17.

Salaries and Working Conditions

As of 2026, the average monthly salary for a firefighter in Ukraine is 23,500 hryvnias, with pay ranging from 10,500 to 56,000 hryvnias. Enlisted personnel of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) earn at least 17,000 hryvnias. In Kyiv and major industrial cities, wages are 15-25% higher. A shift commander can earn between 20,000 and 24,500 hryvnias. Over the past year, the average salary in the sector has increased by 15%.

Under martial law, SES rescuers receive an additional monthly payment of up to 30,000 hryvnias. Those working in combat zones can earn up to 100,000 hryvnias per month. SES employees also have access to a housing leasing program with a mortgage rate of 5%. Starting January 1, 2026, combat veterans became eligible for a tax deduction on rental housing. Additionally, children of veterans are entitled to priority transfer to state-funded spots in higher education institutions.

Since the full-scale invasion began, the SES has lost 91 workers, with 348 others injured. 90% of SES personnel are exempt from mobilization. Firefighters, sappers, rescuers, chemists, and engineers in rapid response units are fully reserved from conscription. These figures highlight the critical role of emergency workers during wartime, as they are indispensable for clearing debris from shelling and neutralizing explosive hazards.
