Andrea Maldera Takes the Helm

According to Главком: Andrea Maldera has been named the new head coach of the Ukrainian national football team. The Executive Committee of the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) approved his candidacy on Monday. His contract runs for two years, with an option for extension. Maldera's debut match in this role is scheduled for May 31, when Ukraine will face Poland in a friendly. Two more summer friendlies are planned, including a game against Denmark on June 7.

Andrea Maldera's Career Path

Born in Milan, Maldera began his coaching journey as a technical coach for AC Milan's U-19 squad from 2006 to 2008. He later worked with the senior team's staff under several notable managers, including:

  • Massimiliano Allegri
  • Leonardo Araújo
  • Filippo Inzaghi
  • Clarence Seedorf

In July 2016, Maldera joined Andriy Shevchenko's coaching staff with the Ukrainian national team, where he stayed until the summer of 2021. During that period, the team reached the quarterfinals of Euro 2020.

Afterward, Maldera served as an assistant to Roberto De Zerbi at both Brighton & Hove Albion and Olympique de Marseille, but he did not follow De Zerbi to Tottenham Hotspur. His focus is now on Ukraine's upcoming official matches in the Nations League, set for the fall of 2026. Ukraine will play six Nations League fixtures, two per month, starting with an away game against Hungary on September 25. On September 28, the team will face Georgia in Batumi.

“Good afternoon! I am very happy to be here. It is an honor to lead the national team. I will do everything for Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine!” - Andrea Maldera

Ukraine will compete in Division B of the 2026/27 Nations League. Based on the draw, the team landed in Group B2 alongside Hungary, Georgia, and Northern Ireland. The group winner will be promoted to Division A, while the last-place team will be relegated to Division C.

This appointment marks a new chapter for Ukraine's national team, especially given Maldera's successful track record with both the squad and various clubs. The two-year contract gives him the chance to implement his vision and inject fresh ideas into the team's play. With critical Nations League matches ahead, the new coach has an opportunity to lay the groundwork for Ukraine's continued growth in international competition.

As Ukraine embarks on a new chapter under Andrea Maldera's leadership, it's noteworthy that this marks the first instance of a foreign coach taking the reins of the national team. This pivotal change in management reflects a broader strategy by the Ukrainian Association of Football to enhance the team's competitive edge.
