Ukraine, Australia, and Britain Impose Major New Sanctions on Russia: Key Targets
Coordinated Sanctions: Ukraine, Australia, and Britain Announce New Measures
According to Главком: In a significant move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has enacted Decree No. 161/2026, implementing a decision by the National Security and Defense Council. This decree imposes sanctions on 29 individuals and 15 Russian organizations. These measures target those supporting Russian aggression and occupation administrations, which are accused of spreading propaganda, distorting history, and looting cultural treasures from temporarily occupied Crimea. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is tasked with informing the European Union and the United States about these new sanctions. This action is part of Kyiv's ongoing legal and diplomatic efforts to counter the occupation.
Australia and Britain Unveil Their Largest Sanctions Packages
Marking the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, the Australian government announced its most extensive sanctions package since February 2022. Australia's new restrictions target 180 individuals, entities, and vessels. Simultaneously, the United Kingdom introduced its largest single package of sanctions since the war began, imposing measures on approximately 300 targets. A primary focus is on the oil transportation sector, including the company Transneft, which handles over 80% of Russia's oil exports.
The UK sanctions also affect subsidiaries of the state nuclear firm Rosatom. A separate part of the new package targets 49 individuals and organizations involved in supplying drone components. Furthermore, nine banks, three nuclear energy companies, and six liquefied natural gas facilities-including the Portovaya and Vysotsk terminals-have been sanctioned. These coordinated actions by the three nations demonstrate a continued, tight-knit collaboration in applying economic pressure on Moscow. The sanctions aim to degrade Russia's military-industrial complex and its key revenue streams.
The introduction of these new sanctions underscores growing international solidarity in support of Ukraine and condemnation of Russian aggression. The effectiveness of these measures could significantly impact Russia's economic capabilities, particularly in the energy sector, which is crucial for its economy. Cooperation between Ukraine, Australia, and Britain highlights the importance of global unity in confronting aggression and defending the international rules-based order.
