Zelensky Announces Fresh Wave of Drone Strikes Aimed at Forcing Russia to Negotiate Peace

Зеленський оголосив про нові удари дронів, спрямовані на змусити Росію сісти за стіл переговорів.

New Wave of Drone Attacks

According to Главком: On June 25, Volodymyr Zelensky unveiled a new campaign of drone strikes intended to pressure the Kremlin into peace talks. Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle attacks on Russian oil refineries have led to gasoline rationing in over a dozen regions of the Russian Federation. The centerpiece of this effort is a medium-range drone operation designed to isolate occupied Crimea by targeting bridges, railways, and ferries. These plans have been in development since early 2025 and became feasible in the second half of May, following the formation of specialized units and the accumulation of equipment.

Major Yevgen Karas, commander of the 413rd Unmanned Systems Regiment, reported that over 70 Russian air defense systems have been destroyed in the last three months. This marks a significant achievement for Ukrainian forces, which continue to aim at severely disrupting the functioning of Russia's Crimean contingent. Truck traffic along the R-280 highway from Mariupol to Crimea has dropped by 71%, highlighting the operation's effectiveness. Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk emphasized that

“a complete blockade is a matter of months, and current actions are more of a defense plan”

Situation in Donbas

Despite successes in drone strikes, the situation in Donbas remains dire. The Russian force in Ukraine numbers 721,300 personnel, and the Russian army maintains at least a two-to-one advantage in artillery. The Russian military fires up to 90 missiles and 300 guided aerial bombs daily. On June 26, the occupation authorities declared a state of emergency in Crimea, signaling heightened tensions in the region.

Against this backdrop, on July 2, Russia attacked Kyiv with drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, and hypersonic Zircon missiles. The assault struck 28 locations, with confirmed reports of 21 fatalities. Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the attack, stating:

“Russia will certainly face consequences for the massive combined strike on Kyiv on the night of July 2.”

These events underscore the complex and perilous situation in Ukraine, where actions by both sides continue to escalate the conflict.

The mounting intensity of military operations on both sides reflects an ongoing escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian successes in drone attacks could become a pivotal factor in potential peace negotiations, yet the situation in Donbas remains critical, with Russian forces maintaining a significant advantage that poses serious challenges for Ukrainian defenses. The state of emergency in Crimea and the relentless shelling of Kyiv highlight the urgent need for a resolution, as the consequences could be catastrophic for civilians in both nations.

As Ukraine intensifies its drone operations, the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, prompting international leaders to weigh in on the conflict. Recently, Trump has advised Zelensky to adopt a more aggressive approach towards Russia, reflecting the growing pressure on Ukraine to strengthen its stance in light of ongoing military challenges in Donbas.
