According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to Alexey Brekht, the former head of the national power grid operator Ukrenergo. The 47-year-old was killed on January 21 while carrying out repair work at an energy facility damaged in an attack by the Russian Federation. This award, Ukraine's highest state honor, recognizes his exceptional service during wartime.
Alexey Brekht dedicated over 24 years to Ukrenergo, rising from a dispatcher to the head of the Dispatch Service. In 2024-2025, he served as acting chairman of the company's board, overseeing the operation, restoration, protection, and development of the national transmission system. According to Presidential Decree No. 138/2026, the title was conferred for his outstanding achievements in strengthening Ukraine's energy security under martial law and his selfless service to the Ukrainian people.
Farewell Ceremony
A farewell ceremony for Alexey Brekht was held on January 23 at St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral in Kyiv, where family, colleagues, and friends paid tribute to the memory of the distinguished energy specialist.
The posthumous award to Brekht symbolizes the nation's recognition of his critical contribution to its energy security amid ongoing conflict. Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been a primary target of military strikes, making the work of specialists like Brekht vital for maintaining power and heat for millions of civilians. His death underscores the extreme dangers faced by infrastructure workers who continue their duties in active war zones.
