Zelenskyy Honors Journalists on Their Professional Day
Ukrainian President’s Message for Journalists’ Day
According to Главком: On June 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy extended greetings to journalists and media professionals for Journalists’ Day, emphasizing the crucial role the media plays in documenting evidence of Russian crimes and countering propaganda. This observance, established by a presidential decree in 1994, marks the date when the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine was admitted to the International Federation of Journalists.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to journalists, reporters, camera operators, fixers, and all staff members of both Ukrainian and international media outlets. He stated that
“everything Ukrainian journalists capture is our truth about this war and evidence of Russian crimes”
and underscored the importance of this work being of high quality to ensure accountability for all of Russia’s crimes and attacks against life.
“I thank the journalists, all media workers-men and women-who work for Ukraine and show the world what our people endure and how we fight for our independence,”
he said.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy thanked foreign media professionals who are “on the right side of history and do not let the world forget or silence what is happening in Ukraine.” According to him, such active support helps Ukraine secure political assistance. The president also called for honoring the memory of journalists who have lost their lives due to this war, highlighting the importance of their contribution to the struggle for truth and independence.
The Role of Journalists in Today’s Challenges
Since the onset of the full-scale invasion, hundreds of foreign correspondents have arrived in Ukraine to cover the unfolding events. Against this backdrop, Ukraine’s Journalists’ Day serves as an important reminder of the media’s role in contemporary challenges and the need for objective reporting.
Recognizing journalists on this day highlights not only their vital function in the information space but also the significance of independent media in the context of war. The work of journalists documenting events and crimes helps shape international support for Ukraine and increases global awareness of the situation in the country. This celebration is a reminder of the necessity to protect freedom of speech and journalistic activity, especially during conflict.
As President Zelenskyy acknowledges the vital contributions of journalists, it is equally important to recognize the efforts of those serving on the front lines of communication.
