Presidential Recognition for Ukraine’s Special Communications Forces

According to Главком: On the occasion of their professional holiday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated the personnel of the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection, presenting state awards to several members. Among those honored was the agency’s head, Oleksandr Potiy, who received the insignia of a Major General. The Day of the State Service of Special Communications is observed annually on May 25-a date officially established in April 2021 to commemorate the agency’s founding in 2006, when it was created from a former Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) unit that had been disbanded.

The Critical Role of the Special Communications Service

As a central executive authority with a special status, the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection employs over 11,000 specialists, 80% of whom serve as military personnel. President Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of their work, stating:

“Among them are those who intercept Shahed drones and operate UAVs, provide communication links for the state and the Defense Forces, and strengthen Ukraine’s cybersecurity.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The agency is responsible for:

• cyber defense
• cryptographic information protection
• security of the National Confidential Communication System
