Ukraine’s President Speaks on Sanctions Targeting Russia

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to recent developments surrounding sanctions imposed on Russia, referencing comments made by then-US President Donald Trump about Russian diesel supplies. He also highlighted a bipartisan US Congressional delegation’s visit to Kyiv, where discussions focused on potential ways to bring the war in Ukraine to a close.

Zelensky emphasized the critical need for firm sanctions to support Ukraine’s defense of its people. He stated,

“The response must be strong. Sanctions under the Lindsey Graham law need to be enforced, Ukraine requires backing to protect lives, and pressure on Russia must continue due to the ongoing war.”

Furthermore, he warned that

“any easing of sanctions on Russia without a clear and sustained de-escalation agreement would be a sign of weakness,”

a move he believes would only prolong the conflict and cause more casualties.

US Congressional Delegation’s Visit to Kyiv

The visiting US Congressional group questioned President Zelensky about the conditions necessary to end the conflict. He outlined several key points, including:

  • implementation of sanctions under the Lindsey Graham legislation
  • continued support for Ukraine’s protection of its citizens
  • maintaining pressure on Russia

Zelensky also highlighted Ukraine’s willingness to pursue reciprocal de-escalation measures and proposed a compromise regarding energy infrastructure.

This week, tensions remained high across Ukraine. Russian forces launched a missile strike on a residential building in Pryluky and dropped aerial bombs on city buses in Kramatorsk. Additionally, sustained shelling targeted energy facilities in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, and other urban centers. These attacks resulted in dozens of fatalities and hundreds of injuries. Zelensky noted,

“Our strikes on Russian oil refineries and other fuel facilities are a direct response to Russia’s years-long terror campaign against Ukraine’s energy sector.”

He added that Ukraine would not attack Russian oil infrastructure unless Russia continues to destroy Ukrainian energy assets.

The president expressed concern over the recent lifting of sanctions on certain Russian oligarchs by European nations, cautioning that

“gifts to Putin will not lead to peace.”

He stressed that

“allowing Russia to sell oil products is effectively funding a war that must end, not continue.”

Zelensky concluded with a call for the United States to engage Russia with firm resolve and to sustain support for Ukraine’s efforts to protect its population.

The arrival of the US Congressional delegation underscores America’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine amid the persistent conflict with Russia. Zelensky’s focus on the necessity of sanctions and international pressure signals Kyiv’s hope for decisive global action to halt the escalation. His firm stance on sanctions reflects Ukraine’s determination to safeguard its sovereignty while remaining open to compromises that do not compromise national security. These developments are likely to influence future diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the regional crisis.

In light of Zelensky's emphasis on the importance of sanctions, it's worth noting his recent interactions with former President Trump, who has also proposed solutions to the ongoing conflict.
