Heating and Energy Crisis Situation

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened an emergency meeting to address critical issues stemming from Russian attacks, including Kyiv's heating supply, an energy crisis in the Kherson region, threats to nuclear safety, and a shortage of air defense missiles. The meeting highlighted the severe and interconnected challenges facing the nation's infrastructure.

Following recent Russian strikes on Kyiv, more than 1,400 apartment buildings have been left without heat. In response, authorities are planning a 'warmth package' distribution program, aiming to provide 40,000 such kits to assist residents during the energy crisis.

Furthermore, in the Kherson region, six settlements have been cut off from normal power supply due to drone strikes. President Zelenskyy stressed that regional authorities must intensify efforts to restore the energy networks. He stated:

“Reports were heard on the situation in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, and other oblasts, Sumy, Chernihiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kropyvnytskyi and its region. The situation in the Kherson region was discussed separately.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Nuclear Safety and Missile Supplies

The meeting also focused on nuclear safety. Zelenskyy reported that the Russian military continues to target infrastructure and networks connected to nuclear power plants, necessitating a higher level of protection. He noted:

“We discussed in detail with the Minister of Energy the situation with nuclear power generation. This requires a different level of response than has been achieved so far.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Separately, the President emphasized the critical importance of securing missile supplies for air defense systems. “We discussed with the Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Minister of Defense the implementation by our partners of our agreements on the supply of missiles for air defense. There must be a clear schedule for receiving the relevant packages from partners,” he added. Zelenskyy underscored the need for a rapid response to every act of Russian aggression to ensure the security of Ukraine and its people. These discussions occur as Ukraine's energy grid remains a primary target, making international support for air defense a matter of urgent national security.

The issues addressed at the meeting underscore the profound challenges Ukraine faces amid the ongoing war. Damage to critical infrastructure, particularly heating and power networks, has severe consequences for civilians, especially during winter. This highlights the urgent need for accelerated recovery efforts and enhanced security for nuclear facilities. Simultaneously, active negotiations for air defense missiles demonstrate the necessity of sustained defense support from international partners, which is vital for protecting the country from further threats.
