Ukraine's Energy Grid Survives Its Most Challenging Wartime Winter, Says Zelenskyy
Surviving the Toughest Winter
According to ДСНС: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared the end of the most difficult winter Ukraine has faced since the full-scale invasion began. Despite enduring massive, sustained attacks, the nation successfully preserved its national power grid. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to energy workers, the State Emergency Service, the military, local authorities, and businesses for their crucial role in defending and restoring critical energy infrastructure.
The winter of 2022-2023 presented unprecedented challenges. Russia initiated the season with a massive strike on December 6th, which involved over 700 distinct targets and more than 50 missiles. Throughout the winter period, Russia launched more than 700 missiles of various types. President Zelenskyy stated,
"We have come through this winter, the most difficult of all the war years,"
and emphasized that
"Ukraine repelled a huge number of mass strikes this winter, with dozens of missiles and hundreds of 'Shahed' drones in a single attack."
This relentless bombardment tested the resilience of Ukraine's defenses like never before.
Gratitude and Collective Effort
The President extended his thanks to all who contributed to protecting the energy infrastructure. The collective effort involved a wide range of groups, including:
- Employees of energy companies
- Repair and emergency crews
- The staff of Ukraine's State Emergency Service
- Ukrainian soldiers
- Air defense units
- Ukrainian aviation
- Mobile fire groups
- Developers, manufacturers, and operators of interceptor systems
- Municipal services
- Local and regional authorities
- Entrepreneurs and businesses, both small and large
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of these groups, Ukraine was able not only to withstand the immense pressure but also to maintain its critically important infrastructure under prolonged assault.
Successfully navigating this winter marks a significant milestone in Ukraine's war effort, demonstrating the nation's capacity to adapt to severe challenges and safeguard its energy independence. Continued support from state institutions and society as a whole will be vital for the ongoing recovery and development of infrastructure damaged by hostilities. This achievement also underscores the importance of sustained international assistance, which remains crucial for Ukraine to strengthen its future energy security and resilience.
