Girona Officially Parts Ways with Míchel After Disastrous Campaign
Míchel Leaves Girona
According to Главком: Spanish club Girona has confirmed the departure of head coach Míchel. His contract was set to run until June 30, but both sides agreed not to extend the partnership. Míchel took over in the summer of 2021, guided the team to La Liga, and spent four seasons in Spain’s top division.
Míchel’s Coaching Journey
A native of Madrid, Míchel began his coaching career in 2012 at Rayo Vallecano, where he also spent most of his playing days. Under his leadership, Rayo Vallecano won the Segunda División in the 2017/18 season. He later moved to Huesca, where he also secured promotion from the second tier at the first attempt. Ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, he joined Girona and again earned promotion to La Liga in his debut season.
In his third season at the helm, Girona finished third in La Liga and qualified for the Champions League. However, in the group stage of Europe’s elite competition, the team managed only one win in eight matches. In the 2025/26 season, Girona ended up second-to-last in La Liga with 41 points, just one point short of safety. The club failed to win any of its final eight league games, drawing four and losing four.
Notable Girona players include:
- Vladyslav Krapyvtsov
- Viktor Tsygankov
- Vladyslav Vanat (who was ruled out for the rest of the campaign after suffering a hamstring injury in early April)
It remains unclear who will take over as the new head coach. Reports suggest that Real Madrid, having paid a release clause for a new manager, allegedly spent €3 million to bring José Mourinho from Benfica Lisbon, with the Portuguese club receiving compensation for the move.
Míchel’s exit follows a poor season in which Girona failed to stay in La Liga. A team that recently earned a Champions League berth now faces the challenge of finding a new coach to restore its status in the top flight and return to winning ways. This transition could prove pivotal for the club, as a change in leadership often opens the door to fresh opportunities and improved results.
Following Girona's relegation from La Liga, the club now faces significant challenges in rebuilding and finding a suitable replacement for Míchel. The team's recent performance, including a disappointing draw against Elche, has raised questions about its direction and future strategies. To understand the implications of this relegation and how it impacts the club, read more about the circumstances surrounding their recent match that sealed their fate.
