Expert Concern Over Electricity Market Price Controls

According to Главком: Former board member of Ukraine's national power company, Ukrenergo, Andriy Nemirovsky, has raised an alarm regarding strict price caps in the electricity market. He warned that these caps could create a supply shortage, rendering the market dysfunctional. Former Ukrenergo head Volodymyr Kudrytskyi also emphasized that the reintroduction of rigid price caps could be linked to a new wave of power outages. These warnings come as Ukraine's energy sector continues to recover from wartime damage and adapt to new market conditions.

Andriy Nemirovsky stressed the economic inadequacy of such price restrictions, stating his view that

“if price caps do not even cover the cost of fuel for electricity generation, it means only one thing: such restrictions are economically inadequate.”

He further underscored that

“a market cannot exist where a producer is physically unable to offer electricity to a consumer due to state-imposed price limits.”

Consequences for the Energy Sector

The situation on the electricity market is causing concern among experts who believe that rigid price caps could lead to serious problems in securing power supply. Under conditions where producers cannot cover their costs, this could negatively impact the stability of the entire energy sector.

Amid growing electricity demand and challenges related to energy security, the issue of price controls becomes critically important. Experts argue that a balance must be found between protecting consumers and ensuring market stability to avoid electricity shortages and new blackouts. The question of reforming the energy sector to ensure its efficiency and resilience remains urgent.

As concerns mount over the potential repercussions of strict price controls in the energy sector, experts caution against further lowering electricity price limits. They highlight that such actions could exacerbate supply shortages and increase reliance on imports, complicating the already fragile recovery of Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
