Ukrainian Tennis Players Shine on the Global Stage

According to Главком: Fifteen-year-old Ukrainian tennis player Polina Skliar is set to make her debut in the main draw of the ITF W100 tournament in Wiesbaden. She powered through qualifying by defeating two opponents: first, Sada Nahimana of Burundi, and then Isabella Shinikova of Bulgaria.

In the opening round of qualifying, Skliar faced Nahimana, who is ranked 260th in the WTA standings. Polina claimed a 6:4, 6:3 victory-the highest-ranked win of her career so far. In the final qualifying round, Skliar dominated Shinikova, ranked 381st in the WTA, with a commanding 6:1, 6:1 scoreline. The match lasted just 54 minutes, during which Skliar fired one ace, committed zero double faults, and secured five breaks. Shinikova, meanwhile, delivered two aces but also had two double faults and failed to convert any break points.

Skliar’s opponent in the round of 32 has not yet been determined.

First All-Ukrainian Final at a WTA Event

Meanwhile, in Rouen, France, history was made with the first all-Ukrainian final at a WTA tournament. The championship match featured Marta Kostyuk and Veronika Podrez, the latter making her WTA final debut. Kostyuk advanced by defeating Germany's Tatjana Maria in the semifinals. Podrez reached the final after Romania's Sorana Cirstea withdrew due to a leg injury.

In the decisive match, Kostyuk beat Podrez 6:3, 6:4 to claim her second career title. Following the tournament, Veronika Podrez climbed 62 spots in the WTA rankings to reach 147th place. Marta Kostyuk, meanwhile, moved up five positions to 23rd in the world.

These achievements highlight the rising talent of Ukrainian female tennis players on the international circuit.

Polina Skliar’s entry into the ITF W100 main draw, combined with the successes of Kostyuk and Podrez at the WTA event, underscores the potential of young Ukrainian athletes and their ability to compete at elite levels.
