Operations of the Mountain Search and Rescue Coordination Unit

According to ДСНС: Since the start of 2026, the Mountain Search and Rescue Coordination Unit of the 'Lviv' Mobile Rapid Response Rescue Center, part of Ukraine's State Emergency Service, has managed 84 incidents in the Carpathian Mountains. These operations have resulted in the rescue of 89 tourists, including 10 children. The unit works closely with coordination centers in the Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Chernivtsi, and Ternopil regions, a collaboration that ensures the high effectiveness of rescue missions. The Carpathians are a popular destination for hikers and skiers, making this coordinated response network vital for regional safety.

Search Methods and Critical Safety Advice

To locate individuals in the mountainous terrain, rescuers deploy canine units and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The rescue service also maintains a daily log of tourist groups, records the completion of hikes, and provides recommendations for safe conduct in the mountains. Despite the efforts of rescue teams, a significant avalanche danger persists in the region, underscoring the absolute necessity of adhering to safety rules during excursions.

These figures highlight the active role of rescue services in safeguarding tourists who visit the Carpathians. Given the elevated avalanche risk, it is crucial for visitors to follow rescuer guidelines and stay informed about the hazards associated with mountain tourism, especially during the winter season. The cooperation between various regional coordination centers is key to rapid emergency response and has the potential to reduce the number of accidents among tourists.
