What Lies Ahead for Medvedchuk's Seized Superyacht 'Royal Romance'
Croatia Maintains Control Over the Royal Romance
According to Главком: Following the expiration of its seizure order, the luxury yacht Royal Romance, owned by Viktor Medvedchuk, remains under Croatian control. This complicates any potential sale, as the vessel is currently docked at a Croatian naval base. Ukraine's Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA) is working to align international and Ukrainian legal frameworks to effectively manage this high-value asset.
The 92-meter Royal Romance is ranked among the world's five most luxurious superyachts, with an estimated value of approximately $200 million. Medvedchuk, a known ally and godfather to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, has had other assets seized, including a helicopter already transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The seizure of such assets is part of a broader international effort to target the wealth of individuals supporting Russia's war.
Medvedchuk's Sanctions and Political Activities
The European Union has imposed sanctions on Medvedchuk and his media outlet, Voice of Europe. Together with Denys Zharkykh, he founded the political project 'Other Ukraine,' which is registered in Russia as a public organization. At the start of the full-scale invasion, Medvedchuk and Vadym Novynskyi were reported to have made threats against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Yaroslava Maksymenko, a representative of ARMA, noted that managing the yacht is an exceptionally complex process due to its location in a foreign jurisdiction. She emphasized that while the asset is under full state control and within a legal framework, its administration will require significant time and international legal coordination.
The situation with the Royal Romance highlights the broader challenges Ukraine faces in reclaiming and managing assets linked to supporters of Russian aggression. The legal hurdles underscore the difficulties of international asset recovery, emphasizing the critical need for cross-border cooperation to ensure justice and weaken the financial networks of those backing the war.
