How Time-Restricted Eating Affects Blood Glucose Control
According to НВ — Техно: A study conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has revealed that limiting food intake to an eight-hour window may improve blood sugar regulation in adults living with type 1 diabetes and obesity. The trial involved 32 adult participants who were divided into three groups, each following a distinct dietary pattern.
- The first group consumed all their meals between 12:00 PM and 8:00 PM without reducing calorie intake.
- The second group reduced their daily calorie consumption by 25%.
- The third group maintained their usual eating habits without changes.
Over the six-month duration, those in the time-restricted eating group experienced an average decrease of 0.5 percentage points in their HbA1c levels, a key marker of long-term blood glucose control. Notably, this group did not see an increase in episodes of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or diabetic ketoacidosis, indicating the approach’s safety within this population.
Lead researcher and professor of kinesiology and nutrition, Krista Varadi, emphasized that these findings support further investigation into time-limited feeding as a viable strategy.
She also cautioned that these results are preliminary and advised individuals with type 1 diabetes not to modify their eating schedules without consulting an endocrinologist or healthcare professional.
Plans for Expanded Research
Future studies involving multiple medical centers are planned to better understand the effects of an eight-hour eating window on health outcomes in people with type 1 diabetes and obesity.
This research holds promise for reshaping treatment approaches for type 1 diabetes and weight management. If larger trials confirm the benefits of this time-restricted eating pattern, it could lead to new dietary guidelines aimed at improving blood sugar control in this patient group.
