Freedom Ship Project Gets a Second Wind

According to НВ — Техно: Freedom Cruise Line International, a U.S.-based company, has announced the revival of its ambitious Freedom Ship concept-a floating city designed to be nearly a mile long, over 240 meters wide, and featuring roughly 30 decks. The vessel is planned to accommodate 80,000 people in total, including 50,000 permanent residents, 10,000 temporary guests, and 20,000 crew and staff members. Construction is estimated to cost $16.2 billion.

Design, Power, and Onboard Features

The Freedom Ship will be powered by a nuclear plant, enabling it to cruise at about 13 km/h and complete a round-the-world voyage lasting two to three years. Onboard amenities include approximately 24 kilometers of walking paths, gardens, green spaces, and a tram network to replace cars for resident transport. The plan also calls for eight helipads and a stadium seating 15,000 spectators. CEO Roger Gooch stated that Schopfer Associates is handling the design, with the ship to be built in sections and assembled at sea.

Notably, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) confirmed in January 2026 that it is developing a regulatory framework for nuclear vessels. However, the Freedom Ship project currently remains a concept without secured funding or permits.

For context, today's largest cruise ship-Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas-carries 5,600 passengers and 2,350 crew, highlighting just how massive the Freedom Ship would be by comparison.
