After constant emergencies in the energy system, Ukrainians are preparing for winter with potential power, heating, and water outages. To prepare for this, experts advise not to panic but to make a basic supply of necessary items in advance. This is important for comfort and peace of mind in case of sudden energy outages.
Heat - the most important
Warm blankets, sleeping bags, woolen socks, thermal underwear - all of this truly saves. If possible, seal the windows with insulation tape or warm film - heat loss is significantly reduced.
A small gas or ceramic heater will also help, but use it only with open windows or in a ventilated room. And be sure to have a carbon monoxide detector - this is a safety issue.
Water - gold in the dark
Have a supply of drinking water - at least a few liters per person. It’s also good to have technical water for the toilet and washing. If there’s a pump or booster station in the house, fill canisters in advance - because without electricity, water won’t be drawn.
Food that fears the dark
Canned goods, cereals, pasta, pates, nuts, dried fruits - everything that doesn’t spoil without a refrigerator. Add a little chocolate or energy bars - they will help when there’s no strength to cook.
If you have a small tourist stove - great. But remember about ventilation and do not use it to heat the room.
Light and communication
Power banks are a must-have. It’s better to have several, enough for a phone, flashlight, and radio. A headlamp is more convenient than candles. But if you use candles - place them away from curtains.
A battery-operated or hand-cranked radio will help you stay connected, even when there’s no internet.
First aid kit and documents
Have basic medications: painkillers, antiseptics, bandaging materials, and your regular medications.
Make copies of documents and save them on your phone or flash drive. Cash will also be helpful - ATMs do not work without electricity.
And lastly - about calmness
Do not rush to buy everything at once. Start with the essentials: warm clothes, water, food, light. Unite with neighbors - it’s easier together.
Agree in advance on how to stay in touch if the mobile network disappears, and who can help the elderly or those who live alone.
Ukrainians have faced similar challenges in winter before and always prove they can adapt. Therefore, the main thing now is not to panic, but to prepare thoroughly. Heat, water, light, calmness, and mutual assistance are the most important in this situation.
