Лижник зNordic Combined Бен Луміс відмовився від другого заїзду через інцидент з обладнанням для виробництва снігу.

Incident at the 2026 Olympics

During the team sprint event on February 19, 2026, American Nordic combined skier Ben Lummis collided with a snowmaking fan on the ski jump. A volunteer failed to clear the equipment from his flight path in time. The fan struck Lummis's shoulder, tearing his suit, though he reported no physical pain. Despite being offered a re-jump according to competition rules, Lummis chose to decline the opportunity. The Nordic combined event, which mixes ski jumping and cross-country skiing, requires precise timing and focus from both athletes and officials.

Competition Results

Weather conditions were deteriorating during the competition, with fresh snow potentially slowing the cross-country skiing segment. Paired with Niklas Malacinski, Ben Lummis was in seventh place after the jumping portion, trailing the leaders by 43 seconds before the cross-country race. Ultimately, the U.S. team finished in seventh place overall.

Ben Lummis, 27, is a member of the U.S. National Guard. The 2026 Olympics mark his third appearance at the Games. Discussing the incident, Lummis remarked:

'Unfortunately, one of them was a little late getting the equipment out of the way, but they're human and these things happen.' - Ben Lummis

He also expressed satisfaction with his performance: 'I was happy with the jump, and mentally, that was my competition jump already.'

The snow fan incident underscores the critical importance of proper event management and athlete safety during major competitions. Despite the disruption, Lummis demonstrated professionalism and a positive outlook. The U.S. team, facing minor adversity, maintained its competitiveness, reflecting their preparation and team spirit.
