World and Olympic high jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh opened her 2026 season at the Oleksiy Demyanyuk Memorial in Lviv, setting a new meet record. This marked the first time in three years the world record holder began an international campaign on home soil in Ukraine. Mahuchikh commenced her series by clearing 1.91m without issue. She then successfully navigated 1.96m on her first attempt. The symbolic 2.00m mark was conquered on her second try. Finally, on her third attempt, she cleared 2.03m, establishing the new Demyanyuk Memorial record. This 2.03m jump also stands as the world's leading mark for the 2026 season so far.
Competition Outcomes and Future Schedule
Tetiana Bilik secured second place with a best of 1.80m, while Melaniia Vakulina took third by clearing 1.72m. Mahuchikh confirmed her intention to compete at the Ukrainian Indoor Championships scheduled for February 2026. Her season was originally slated to begin at the Springer-Meeting in Cottbus, Germany.
