Boris Grebenshchikov's New British Citizenship

Russian authorities have initiated a criminal investigation after musician Boris Grebenshchikov acquired British citizenship. The probe centers on whether Grebenshchikov, who now resides in the UK, formally notified Russia's Interior Ministry of this change in his status, as required by law. Failure to do so could lead to criminal charges against him. This case highlights the increasing legal risks faced by Russian public figures who obtain foreign citizenship.

Grebenshchikov was granted citizenship in July 2025, with his wife receiving hers in October of the same year. The musician reportedly did not inform Russian officials, prompting the investigation. His new status was discovered through the UK's Companies House register, which shows that he and his wife, both Russian citizens at the time, founded the company BG PLUS LLP in 2022.

Political Context and Repercussions

Grebenshchikov left Russia following the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In June 2023, he was designated a 'foreign agent' by the Russian government. This was part of a broader update to the foreign agent registry by the Russian Ministry of Justice, which also included Nikita Khrushchev's great-granddaughter Nina Khrushcheva and Ukrainian journalist Iryna Romalyska. The current investigation is ongoing to determine if he submitted the required notification about his British citizenship.

Grebenshchikov's acquisition of a British passport underscores a trend of Russian cultural figures emigrating abroad in response to the domestic political climate. The swift reaction from Russian law enforcement signals tighter scrutiny of such individuals, who risk being labeled foreign agents. The outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for other artists facing political pressure who choose to leave Russia.
