Carbon monoxide is an invisible killer: why you shouldn't use a gas stove for heating

In Ukraine, due to power outages and heating issues, people are trying to warm up using gas stoves. This can lead to dangerous situations, as carbon monoxide emitted during their operation is deadly. Carbon monoxide (CO) is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it particularly dangerous to health.

Danger of using gas stoves

A gas stove is designed exclusively for cooking. Using it for heating a room is improper and dangerous. If the burner is on, the window must be opened for micro-ventilation to ensure fresh air intake and to avoid the accumulation of carbon monoxide. It is prohibited to leave gas unattended, especially overnight, as this can lead to tragedy.

Experts from the 'GasTruth' information center warn that such actions can cost lives.

They also advise it is better to wear an extra sweater than to risk health due to carbon monoxide. Naftogaz has called for the installation of special gas detection sensors, which can significantly reduce the risks associated with its use. Safety should come first, especially in conditions where alternative heating methods are limited.

In the ongoing energy crisis in Ukraine, it is important to raise public awareness about the dangers of using gas stoves for heating rooms. Carbon monoxide is a serious threat, and its consequences can be fatal. Calls for the installation of gas detection sensors can significantly reduce risks, but the best solution remains to avoid using gas stoves for purposes other than cooking.
