'This will be Putin's victory' – Podolyak on peace at the expense of Ukraine's territory

Any concessions on Ukraine's territories in the Russian-Ukrainian war will be seen by the Kremlin as its victory.

In this case, Russian President Vladimir Putin will be able to 'save face' without facing responsibility for his actions. This was stated by Mikhail Podolyak, advisor to the head of the President's Office, on Telegram on December 17. He reacted to the article by former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

'All fans of 'simple solutions' must remember the obvious: any agreement with the devil, a 'bad peace' at the expense of Ukraine's territories, will become Putin's victory and a recipe for success for autocrats around the world,' Podolyak wrote.

According to him, such a decision only scales Russia's appetites, significantly increases Russian aggression, multiplies new conflicts worldwide, makes rockets tools of international relations, and leads to an era of instability and a race for nuclear weapons among non-nuclear states.

'The only possible way to end the war and establish peace lies through returning respect for international law. Therefore, through Ukraine reclaiming its territories, an open trial against Russian war criminals, and Russia's obligations for long-term reparations,' Podolyak believes.

He noted that each day the scenario of wanting to 'save face' for Putin is becoming more understood in Western capitals on both sides of the ocean.

'We hear this from Stoltenberg and Borrell, Steinmeier and Blinken. This speaks of one thing: the time of 'advisors' and lovers who sacrifice parts of Europe in any unclear situation has ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall. It is time for responsible leadership,' concluded the advisor to the head of the President's Office.

On December 12, Henry Kissinger published an article in The Spectator titled 'How to Avoid Another World War'. In it, he presented his vision for resolving the war in Ukraine, which was deemed controversial.

In particular, Kissinger suggested that the best option for resolving the war in Ukraine, in his opinion, is a return to the borders before February 24, either militarily or through negotiations, possibly conducting referendums in 'disputed territories'.
