2024 European Fencing Championships Moved
The 2024 European Fencing Championships, originally scheduled for Tallinn, Estonia, will now be held in France. The International Fencing Federation (FIE) made this decision on January 14, 2024. The move was prompted by Estonia's inability to provide a written government guarantee of non-discrimination against participants based on nationality. This is a new requirement established by the FIE on November 4, 2023.
The championship was planned for June, with hosting rights previously awarded to Estonia. However, following rule changes concerning athlete neutral status, the FIE introduced new obligations for host nations. These require a formal written confirmation that no athlete will face discrimination based on nationality and that all will be permitted to compete.
Assessment of Estonia's Preparedness
In December 2023, European Fencing Confederation (EFC) President Pascal Tessier and Secretary General Jacek Slupski visited Estonia to evaluate the country's readiness. Their key inquiry was whether the Estonian government could issue the required letter, turning the issue into a political, not just organizational, matter. Following a visit to the Ministry of Culture, it was confirmed that Estonia had met all other FIE requirements except for this specific written guarantee.
"The FIE's decision has only just been announced, even though it was made on January 14,"
Aivar Paalberg
Commenting on the situation, Aivar Paalberg noted that recent changes allowing athletes to sign a declaration opposing war are sufficient for obtaining neutral status. He also recalled that the background to this issue is linked to an incident where Indonesia barred Israeli athletes from the World Gymnastics Championships. This context highlights the FIE's proactive measures to prevent similar exclusions in its own events.
Consequently, the 2024 European Fencing Championships will take place in France because Estonia could not provide the necessary guarantees. This underscores the significant role political considerations now play in international sport. The relocation serves as a clear example of how geopolitical factors can impact major sporting events and the increasing importance host nations must place on ensuring equal conditions for all competitors.
