Putin’s Trip to Beijing: A Closer Look

During Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Chinese capital, a Chinese military orchestra played the 'Dance of the Little Swans' from the ballet 'Swan Lake.' This excerpt from Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s classic composition became a symbolic highlight of the event. Russian media released the official menu and program, which listed the performance of this piece.

In the Soviet era, the 'Dance of the Little Swans' was frequently used to fill broadcast slots during times of national crisis. For instance, it aired on state television following the deaths of Soviet leaders such as:

  • Leonid Brezhnev
  • Yuri Andropov
  • Konstantin Chernenko

State channels also played a recording of the ballet continuously on August 19, 1991, during the attempted coup d’état, making it an iconic moment in the country’s history.

Leaders’ Summit

On May 20, 2026, Chinese leader Xi Jinping held an official meeting with Vladimir Putin in Beijing. The talks focused on deepening bilateral partnership, criticism of U.S. foreign policy, and the ongoing war in Iran. However, during the visit, Putin failed to secure an agreement with China on the construction of the 'Power of Siberia-2' gas pipeline.

Analyst Andriy Kovalenko noted that China appears reluctant to rush into new large-scale energy projects, which keeps Moscow in a dependent position. Such factors could shape the future trajectory of bilateral relations in the energy sector.

The performance of the 'Dance of the Little Swans' at the Putin-Xi meeting can be seen as a symbolic gesture highlighting cultural ties between Russia and China. Yet, the context of the negotiations reveals challenges in their bilateral relationship, especially in energy cooperation. With China holding back on swift investments in new projects, Russia may find itself in a vulnerable position, affecting its economic outlook and geopolitical ambitions.

Despite the cultural showcase during Putin's visit, the backdrop of geopolitical tensions remains significant. As discussed in another report, Xi's call for a ceasefire in Iran highlights the complex dynamics at play in the region, further complicating the discussions between the two leaders and their nations.
