New EU Sanctions Package Against Russia

Josep Borrell, the head of EU foreign diplomacy, announced that the European Union will present a new extensive sanctions package against Russia in the coming months. According to him, this package may become the largest since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Borrell noted that existing sanctions have already inflicted significant damage on the Russian military machine, depriving it of over 1 trillion euros. Following the introduction of the new sanctions package, the number of sanctioned Russian organizations may increase by a third.

Borrell did not specify when exactly the new restrictions will be imposed and what their content will be. It is important to note that on July 23, 2026, permanent representatives of EU countries reached a political agreement on the 21st sanctions package, which is already hitting the Russian energy sector, financial sector, and cryptocurrency domain.

Sanctions from the USA, New Zealand, and Switzerland

Among other actions to impose sanctions, the US Senate supported the bill by Senator Lindsey Graham, which aims to strengthen sanctions against Russia and Iran. This bipartisan bill proposes introducing secondary tariffs of 500% on goods purchased by countries importing Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other items.

Additionally, New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced a new round of sanctions aimed at individuals and organizations supporting Russia's war against Ukraine. The New Zealand sanctions list includes individuals and organizations involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children.

Switzerland has also introduced new sanctions against Russia, adding 9 individuals and 45 organizations to its list. Furthermore, Switzerland updated information regarding another 11 individuals and organizations already on the sanctions lists.

Borrell emphasized that 'EU sanctions have already cost Russia dearly' and expressed intent to continue pressure on Moscow until it ends its war in Ukraine. 'After their introduction, the total number of sanctioned Russian organizations will immediately increase by a third. Pressure must increase until Moscow ends its war.'

The planned EU sanctions reflect the growing international isolation of Russia and the desire of Western countries to intensify pressure on the Kremlin in response to aggression in Ukraine. Parallel actions by the USA, New Zealand, and Switzerland demonstrate global solidarity in the fight against violations of international law. The introduction of new restrictions could significantly impact the Russian economy and military capabilities, continuing the efforts of the international community to support Ukraine and punish the aggressor.

As the EU prepares to unveil its most extensive sanctions package yet, it is essential to consider the broader international context of these measures. Recent developments, such as the bipartisan agreement in the US Senate aimed at enhancing sanctions against both Russia and Iran, highlight a unified global stance against these nations. This agreement proposes significant tariffs on goods linked to Russian energy imports, further tightening the economic pressure.
