EU Prepares Sanctions Against Israel Over Port Entry for Ships Carrying Stolen Ukrainian Grain

ЄС розробляє заходи щодо обмеження діяльності Ізраїлю через вхід суден з незаконно вивезеним українським зерном.

EU Sanctions Loom Over Israel for Handling Stolen Ukrainian Grain

The European Union is considering imposing sanctions on Israeli individuals and companies involved in receiving Russian ships that transported stolen Ukrainian grain. This move follows the arrival of the vessel Panormitis at the port of Haifa, carrying looted wheat. Ukraine has demanded that Israel provide information on the grain's origin, as the incident occurred despite prior warnings from Ukrainian officials to Israeli authorities. This case highlights ongoing efforts to disrupt Russia's exploitation of occupied Ukrainian agricultural resources.

Anouar El-Anouni, the EU's foreign affairs representative, confirmed that the bloc has taken note of the ship's unloading. The EU condemned actions that help fund Russia's military aggression and emphasized its readiness to expand sanctions to include entities in third countries. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has previously warned that Russia is building a shadow fleet, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Arrival of the Panormitis at Haifa Port

The Panormitis docked at Haifa port on April 27 at 1:07 AM Kyiv time. Its cargo holds 6,200 tons of wheat and over 19,000 tons of barley. The vessel had been anchored at the port of Kavkaz, located in Russian territorial waters, with cargo documents issued at the Russian port of Temryuk. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Israeli ambassador to deliver a formal protest note over the ship's arrival with stolen grain.

Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar stated that the accusations lack evidence and that no proof of violations has been provided to the Israeli side. He further remarked that

“diplomatic relations between friendly states should not be built on public statements on social media”
and assured that
“the issue will be reviewed, and all Israeli authorities will act strictly in accordance with the law”
.

This incident underscores rising tensions between Ukraine and Israel, as well as the critical need to uphold international norms amid Russia's aggression. The situation involving stolen Ukrainian grain and the reception of Russian ships could have serious repercussions for bilateral diplomatic relations, especially given the international community's support for Ukraine. It is essential for all parties to continue dialogue and seek conflict resolution in line with international law.

The situation surrounding the transportation of stolen Ukrainian grain has escalated, with Israel permitting a Russian vessel to leave despite Ukraine's demands for seizure.
