The European Union supports Ukraine in the defense sector, making an important step towards the integration of the Ukrainian defense industry into the European system. During the Danish presidency of the EU Council and the European Parliament, a decision was made to create a European Defense Industrial Program (EDIP), which will allow Ukraine to participate in defense projects of common interest.
The previous agreement provides for the establishment of a targeted defense funding program worth 1.5 billion euros, which will operate from 2025 to 2027 in the form of grants.
An interesting feature of the program is the engagement of the Ukrainian defense industry through a specialized Ukraine Support Instrument. It is planned to allocate 300 million euros for this instrument from the total EDIP budget. A decision has also been made regarding Ukraine's participation in European defense projects of common interest.
Strengthening European defense capabilities
EDIP aims to enhance the defense readiness of the European Union by strengthening the competitiveness and operational capability of the European defense technology industrial base (EDTIB). The program also provides for the integration of Ukraine into this base.
'The European Defense Industrial Program is key to Europe’s defense readiness. It will enhance our ability to produce and supply critically important defense equipment and ensure our ability to respond quickly and decisively to an increasingly complex security situation,' said Danish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen.
The Danish Minister emphasized that the program will bring Ukraine closer to the European defense industry, which will be beneficial for both Ukraine and the EU countries.
The European Union supports Ukraine in the defense sector by rolling out the European Defense Industrial Program. This will enable Ukraine to participate in joint defense projects and enhance Europe’s defense capability. The agreement provides for significant investments and cooperation between Ukraine and European partners, contributing to the overall security of the region.
