Ukrainian F-16s Grounded for Weeks by Critical Missile Shortage

Затримки у постачанні ракет призвели до бездіяльності українських F-16.

Ukrainian F-16s Face Critical AIM-9 Sidewinder Shortage

From late November to mid-December, Ukraine's fleet of F-16 fighter jets faced a severe shortage of American-made AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. This critical gap, lasting over three weeks, left the entire F-16 force with only a handful of operational missiles, drastically reducing its ability to intercept incoming Russian drones and cruise missiles. This incident highlights the logistical challenges of sustaining advanced Western weapons systems in a high-intensity conflict.

During the shortage, F-16 pilots were forced to conduct daytime combat sorties, attempting to shoot down drones using their onboard cannons. This was a significant handicap, as most Russian drone attacks occur under cover of darkness. Pilots also resorted to attempting to reuse missiles that had previously failed to launch, after they had undergone technical maintenance.

Resupply and New Defense Initiatives

The vast majority of Ukrainian pilots use older AIM-9 variants, known as the Lima and Mike models, which were manufactured in the 1970s and 1980s. The missile shortage was alleviated in December when Ukraine received a new shipment of AIM-9s from its international partners.

In a related development, the Pentagon and at least one Gulf state are negotiating the purchase of Ukrainian interceptor drones. These drones are intended to help defend against attacks from Iranian-made Shahed drones. The Sidewinder is a short-range, heat-seeking missile, a mainstay of air forces for decades, but its supply must be carefully managed in a protracted war.

This missile deficit underscores the vulnerability of Ukrainian air defense during intense combat, where the effective interception of drones and missiles is critically important.

The resumption of AIM-9 deliveries demonstrates continued support from Ukraine's allies, which is vital for maintaining the country's defense against sustained aggression. The negotiations for interceptor drones also point to Ukraine's proactive efforts to adapt its defensive strategy to meet evolving battlefield threats.
