Violence Erupts in Naples
Ahead of their scheduled match, a group of Chelsea supporters were attacked by Napoli fans in Naples on January 27, 2026. The incident occurred in the Santa Maria la Nova square area, where the assailants used knives, knuckledusters, and clubs. Two Chelsea fans sustained injuries requiring hospitalization, though Chelsea's press office confirmed that neither life is in danger. Such pre-match violence is a recurring issue in European football, often linked to deep-seated rivalries.
One of the injured was treated and subsequently discharged from the Vecchio Pellegrini hospital. Approximately 2,500 Chelsea fans had traveled to Italy to support their team for the match, which was set to begin at 10:00 PM Kyiv time. In response to the violence, Italian police have significantly increased security measures for the event.
Separate Tragedy in Romania
In a separate and tragic event also on January 27, a road accident in Romania claimed the lives of 10 supporters of the Greek club PAOK. The fans were en route to an away match for the UEFA Europa League's eighth round against French side Lyon.
Chelsea has issued the following safety advice to its traveling supporters:
- Avoid traveling through the city alone;
- Follow all instructions from local law enforcement;
- Steer clear of any areas known for potential conflict to ensure personal safety while in Naples.
This attack in Naples highlights the persistent problem of football-related hooliganism across Europe. Given this escalation, local authorities are expected to maintain heightened security not just for the match but in the wider city area, aiming to prevent future incidents. It remains crucial for clubs and their fan bases to cooperate fully with police to ensure safety at sporting events.
