The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, stated that the European Union's ban on Russian nuclear fuel could pose a serious threat to Europe's energy security. He opposed the European Commission's proposal to stop importing Russian energy due to the events in Ukraine and the energy crisis of 2022. Fico emphasized that Slovakia will not support such decisions, deeming them 'meaningless ideological moves.'

'When it comes to gas and oil, we are just shooting ourselves in the foot,' said the Prime Minister of Slovakia.

In September, Slovakia signed an agreement with the United States regarding nuclear energy, planning to build a new reactor with a capacity of 1000 megawatts. This position of Fico does not align with the views of the European Commission, which believes that severing energy ties with Russia will improve Europe's security in the future.

The conclusion of the agreement between Slovakia and the United States on nuclear energy and the response of Prime Minister Robert Fico to the European Commission's proposal may cause a rift in relations between EU countries and Russian groups, as well as impact the energy security of the region. The refusal of Russian nuclear fuel may have serious consequences for countries that depend on Russia for the supply of this type of energy resources. At the same time, the agreement between Slovakia and the United States may strengthen energy security in the region and create alternative energy supply sources for European countries.
