FIFA is evaluating whether to relocate the 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoff matches from Mexico due to a severe deterioration in the country's security situation. The matches are scheduled for late March 2026, but widespread unrest erupted in several Mexican states following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (El Mencho), leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, in Tapalpa, Jalisco, on February 22. A state of emergency has been declared in Jalisco as a result. Tournament Format and Competing Nations
Six national teams are set to compete in the intercontinental playoffs:
- New Caledonia will face Jamaica on March 26, with the winner advancing to play DR Congo on March 31.
- Bolivia will play Suriname on March 26, and the victor of that match will then meet Iraq.
The competition is currently planned for two host cities: matches involving New Caledonia, Jamaica, and DR Congo are slated for Zapopan, while games for Bolivia, Suriname, and Iraq are scheduled for Guadalajara.
An anonymous FIFA official indicated that the playoff fixtures could be moved if FIFA cannot quickly obtain assurances for their safe staging. Consequently, the instability in Mexico may significantly disrupt the organization of these high-stakes matches, which have already generated considerable interest among global football fans.
The security crisis was triggered by the elimination of one of Mexico's most powerful drug cartels, jeopardizing not only major sporting events but also regional stability as a whole.
