Henrikh Mkhitaryan Ends International Career
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, one of Armenia's most celebrated footballers, has announced his retirement from international duty. The legendary midfielder will not return to the national team, choosing instead to focus fully on his club career. This decision was finalized following a meeting with the Armenian national team's head coach, Yeghishe Melikyan.
A Record-Setting International Journey
Mkhitaryan's international career began in 2007. Over the course of 95 caps, he scored 32 goals, making him the all-time top scorer for Armenia. His final appearance for the national team came in November 2021. His retirement marks the end of an era for Armenian football, which loses its most influential modern player. The meeting with Coach Melikyan reportedly covered various topics concerning both European and Armenian football.
At club level, Mkhitaryan has enjoyed a distinguished career across Ukraine, Germany, England, and Italy. He started his journey at Ukrainian club Metalurh Donetsk in 2009, later moving to Shakhtar Donetsk for two and a half seasons. His remarkable 2012/13 campaign saw him become the Ukrainian Premier League's top scorer with 25 goals. A subsequent record €27.5 million transfer took him to Borussia Dortmund in Germany. He has also played for Manchester United, Arsenal, Roma, and Inter Milan, establishing himself as a versatile and technically gifted attacking midfielder.
While his focus now shifts entirely to his club future, Mkhitaryan's legacy with the Armenian national team is secure. His contributions on the pitch and his role in raising the profile of Armenian football globally will be long remembered by fans and players alike.
