Remembering Oleksandr Krokhmalyuk

Every morning at 9 a.m., Ukrainians honor those lost to the Russian-Ukrainian war. Among them is Senior Sergeant Oleksandr Krokhmalyuk, known by the call sign "Krokha," who died in 2025—likely in Detention Center No. 2 in Kamyshin, Volgograd Oblast, Russia. Born on February 6, 1969, in Cherkasy, he graduated from high school with a gold medal. In 1988, he earned a diploma with honors from the Cherkasy Medical College.

After graduation, Krokhmalyuk served in the 23rd Separate Air Assault Brigade in Kremenchuk. In 1991, he enrolled at the KGB Higher School in Moscow but left without completing his studies. Starting in 1994, he built his own agricultural business, cultivating oyster mushrooms. In 2016, he joined the Azov Regiment, and three years later, he became the head of its medical service.

Defense of Mariupol and a Hero's Legacy

During the defense of Mariupol, Krokhmalyuk spent 86 days at the Azovstal steel plant, where he set up the Zalizyaka hospital, treating over a thousand wounded.

"Stabilization points at Azovstal were hell on earth. Only extraordinary people could provide first aid and perform surgery under those conditions—and our friend Krokha was one of them," said his comrade Mykyta Nadtochiy.
He lost 20 kilograms during his service, yet even in dire circumstances, he stayed optimistic. "Dad wrote that he weighed less than he did at 21. But even in those photos where he’s thin and exhausted, he still has a big smile," his daughter Sofia shared.

After Azovstal, Krokhmalyuk was held in Olenivka and Taganrog, with his last known location being Detention Center No. 2 in Kamyshin. His body was returned in September 2025 as part of a 1,000-for-1,000 repatriation exchange. He received multiple decorations, including:

  • For Participation in the Anti-Terrorist Operation
  • For Military Service to Ukraine
  • Defender of the Fatherland
  • For Valiant Service
  • Thanks and Certificate from the National Guard of Ukraine

Krokhmalyuk was buried on May 24, 2026, at Cemetery No. 4 in Cherkasy. He is survived by his wife, daughter, granddaughter, brother, and sister.

"I’m so happy that I look like you, and you will live on through me and my actions. For me, you will always remain a kind, bright, and very dear person," Sofia said.
Oleksandr Krokhmalyuk left a lasting impression on his loved ones and comrades, who will remember him as a symbol of courage and humanity.

Honoring individuals like Krokhmalyuk is a vital part of Ukrainian society, as they embody bravery and self-sacrifice in the fight for independence. His service in the Azov Regiment and his role in the defense of Mariupol highlight the sacrifices made by military personnel to protect their country. The return of his body to Ukraine and his burial reflect the respect for his memory and recognition of his contributions to the Ukrainian people.

As the tragic stories of those who suffered in Russian captivity continue to emerge, the fate of other Azov fighters remains a poignant reminder of the ongoing conflict. For instance, another medic from the Azov Regiment faced a similar harrowing ordeal, ultimately losing his life while detained.
