Price Analysis for Buckwheat Groats
A survey of buckwheat prices in Kyiv supermarkets, including chains like Varus, ATB, Fora, and Silpo, reveals a sharp increase in the cost of this staple. As of today, the price per kilogram is nearing 70 Ukrainian hryvnias (UAH), and one-kilogram packages are becoming scarce. Prices fluctuate based on brand and packaging, reflecting the overall market trend of tightening supply.
Shrinking Crop Area and Future Projections
According to Svitlana Cheremisina, a researcher at the Institute of Agrarian Economics, the area of land sown with buckwheat in Ukraine is contracting significantly. In 2023, the crop covered nearly 147.9 thousand hectares, but by 2025, this area is projected to shrink to just 58.5 thousand hectares. Buckwheat production is also set to plummet from 210.7 thousand tons in 2023 to 70.8 thousand tons in 2025. With Ukraine's annual domestic consumption of buckwheat at 100-110 thousand tons, the projected shortfall for the 2025 harvest is approximately 30-35 thousand tons.
Economists forecast that until the new harvest arrives in late summer or early autumn of 2026, the average retail price for buckwheat could reach 55-60 UAH per kilogram. This aligns with the analysis provided by Svitlana Cheremisina:
'In 2026, Ukraine will face a shortage of buckwheat groats due to a sharp reduction in the sown area. While in 2023 buckwheat was planted on nearly 147.9 thousand hectares, in 2025 it will be only 58.5 thousand hectares. Accordingly, production has fallen: from 210.7 thousand tons to 70.8 thousand tons. With annual consumption of 100-110 thousand tons, the real deficit of the 2025 harvest is about 30-35 thousand tons.' Svitlana Cheremisina
These figures point to serious challenges for Ukraine's agricultural sector and are likely to impact consumer habits, as rising prices for basic foodstuffs always cause public concern. Buckwheat is a traditional staple in Eastern European diets, making this shortage particularly impactful. Faced with scarcity and higher prices, Ukrainian consumers will undoubtedly seek alternatives or adjust their dietary patterns.
