Meloni’s proposal gains traction

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced plans to propose a special EU negotiator tasked with facilitating dialogue between Ukraine and Russia. The formal pitch is expected at the upcoming EU leaders’ summit in Brussels on June 18–19. Meloni stressed that the envoy should come from a medium-sized EU nation rather than one of the bloc’s largest powers.

Meloni also confirmed that discussions around this initiative are advancing on the sidelines of the G7 meeting. While she did not name a specific candidate, she emphasized the need to select someone whose profile could genuinely advance the peace process. She cautioned that

“we cannot always take this for granted.”

Italy steps up its international role

In addition, Meloni shared updates from her talks with U.S. President Donald Trump during the G7 summit. These developments underscore Italy’s growing involvement in international efforts to resolve the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Notably, European Council President António Costa has also been working to establish an informal communication channel with the Kremlin, reflecting broader attempts by European leaders to address the ongoing crisis on the continent.

Meloni’s initiative could mark a significant step toward restarting dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, while highlighting the influence of medium-sized EU states in shaping the Union’s foreign policy. Amid rising tensions between the two countries, this proposal may lay the groundwork for renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the region and improving Europe’s overall security environment.

As Italy seeks to enhance its diplomatic efforts, the idea of a unified EU representative for negotiations with Russia gains support. This approach could streamline communication and foster collaboration among member states.
