South Korean Skiers Disqualified from 2026 Winter Olympics
Two cross-country skiers from South Korea have been disqualified from the 2026 Winter Olympics after prohibited fluorinated wax was detected on their skis. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) made the decision to disqualify Han Dasom and Lee Eui-jin following the women's classic sprint event held on February 10, 2026. Their results were annulled and their names removed from the official records. This incident highlights the stringent equipment regulations in place at the highest levels of winter sports competition.
Banned Substance Leads to Penalty
The disqualification resulted from the discovery of traces of fluorine on the glide zones of their skis. Fluorinated waxes have been completely banned by FIS since the 2023/24 season. In the qualification round, Lee Eui-jin placed 70th and Han Dasom 74th out of 89 participants. It is important to note that neither athlete finished within the top 30 required to advance to the event finals.
The Korean National Olympic Committee launched an internal investigation into the matter. The Korean side asserts that the presence of the banned wax was due to an error by their wax supplier. Consequently, the Korea Ski Association issued a strict warning to the supplier and decided to replace the team's entire fleet of skis.
This case underscores the critical importance of adhering to anti-doping rules and equipment standards at international competitions, particularly the Olympic Games.
The disqualification may impact the reputation of South Korean skiing and prompt more rigorous controls over the quality of materials used. Implementing new procedures for the supply and inspection of skis could be a vital step in preventing similar incidents in the future.
