Kremlin Responds to Ukraine's Reported Plans

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has commented on a report by the Financial Times regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's alleged intention to announce a plan for elections and a referendum on February 24. Peskov stated that the Kremlin has now set a new condition for reaching a peace agreement with Ukraine. This development comes amid a prolonged military stalemate and shifting international pressure on both nations.

The FT report suggested Zelenskyy's plan could include presidential elections and a referendum on a peace deal with Russia. However, Peskov noted it is 'too early to speak about this yet.' He added that information about election preparations has caused some controversy, as sources within the Ukrainian presidential administration have denied the reports.

Russia's Stance on Peace Talks

Furthermore, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko stated that

"any peace agreement with Ukraine must provide security guarantees not only for Kyiv but also for Moscow."
This underscores the Kremlin's position on the necessity of securing its own interests within any negotiation process.

The Kremlin's comments on potential Ukrainian elections highlight the complex dynamics surrounding peace talks. Russia's stance, which includes demands for reciprocal security guarantees, suggests that any initiative from Kyiv is likely to face additional preconditions from Moscow.
