Raspberry Prices Spike Across Ukraine
By June 2024, early-season raspberries in Kyiv supermarkets had surged to 999 UAH per kilogram. This sharp price increase stems from spring frosts that severely damaged crops, compounded by a labor market crisis. Ukrainian raspberry producers are now facing an estimated loss of 1,165 tons of fruit, a major blow to the industry. For context, Ukraine has long been a key global exporter of raspberries, making this season’s setbacks particularly significant for international markets.
The cold snap, with temperatures plunging to -3°C to -4°C, proved devastating for the plants. The raspberries were in the budding and early flowering stages when the frost hit, drastically reducing bloom counts. Western regions bore the brunt of the damage:
- Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast lost 364 tons;
- Lviv Oblast lost 152 tons;
- Chernivtsi Oblast lost 134 tons.
To harvest the crop, the industry requires over 70,000 workers at the peak of the season. Ukraine’s raspberry fields cover roughly 5,000 hectares, with each hectare needing about 15 pickers. Taras Bashtannik warned that without foreign labor, the country risks failing to gather the harvest altogether and losing its status as a top global exporter.
Costs Climb for Other Fruits Too
Beyond raspberries, significant losses are also forecast for apricots and peaches. Last year, raspberry prices crashed sharply in late July, but this season the berry has become a true luxury item, as social media users note. The fruit market remains under pressure, with producers hoping for better harvesting conditions ahead.
The raspberry price surge highlights the severe challenges facing Ukraine’s agricultural sector. Losing a substantial portion of the crop could trigger economic hardships for growers and further strain consumers already grappling with rising costs. Without adequate labor to bring in the harvest, the situation may worsen, threatening Ukraine’s foothold in the global fruit market.
The impact of spring frosts on Ukraine's agriculture extends beyond raspberries, with nearly 3,000 tons of various berries reported lost due to similar weather conditions. This significant loss not only threatens the livelihoods of local farmers but also poses risks to the overall berry market in the region.
