Nearly 3,000 Tons of Ukrainian Berries Lost to Spring Frosts
How Late-April Freezes Devastated Ukraine’s Berry Harvest
According to Главком: Ukraine’s berry farmers are facing severe losses after a late-April cold snap damaged crops during peak flowering. According to preliminary estimates from the Ukrainian Berry Association, agricultural producers will miss out on approximately 2,905 tons of berries. The hardest hit is garden strawberries, with losses reaching 1,740 tons-over 20% of the expected yield. Nighttime temperatures dropped as low as -4 to -6°C in some regions, coinciding with the critical blooming period and causing widespread damage to blossoms.
Regional Breakdown and Crop-Specific Impacts
The Rivne region is projected to suffer the greatest strawberry losses, estimated at 376 tons. Farms in Volyn and Lviv oblasts also sustained significant damage. Raspberry producers may lose around 1,165 tons, nearly a quarter of their forecasted harvest, with the worst impacts reported in Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Bukovina. Blueberries, however, emerged relatively unscathed thanks to their later growth cycle and greater cold tolerance. This year, Ukraine also anticipates substantial apricot and peach losses due to the same anomalous spring chill. The consequences of these frosts are expected to include:
- Reduced harvest volumes;
- A shifted harvest season;
- Uneven fruit ripening;
- Shortages and rising prices for apricots and peaches.
The scale of these fruit and berry losses is likely to ripple through Ukraine’s agricultural sector, tightening supply and pushing market prices higher. This could dampen consumer demand and strain economic stability in key growing regions. In response, farmers will need to explore ways to offset the damage, such as boosting investment in crop protection technologies and adapting to shifting climate patterns.
The impact of the recent frost extends beyond berries, affecting the overall agricultural landscape in Ukraine. As reported, the country's fruit and vegetable yields have plummeted, leading to significant price adjustments across the market.
