IOC Issues Statement on Russian Flag Incident at 2026 Winter Olympics

Міжнародний олімпійський комітет відреагував на випадок із російським прапором на зимових Олімпійських іграх 2026 року.

Russian Flag Displayed During 2026 Olympic Opening Ceremony

During the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics, spectators at Milan's San Siro stadium displayed the flag of the Russian Federation. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has now formally responded to inquiries about this incident, clarifying that the flag was brought in by fans, not by athletes. One of the spectators, Russian national Yevgeny Burdenyuk, stated that he and his friends brought the flag for their own personal enjoyment and had no intention of posting about it on social media.

IOC Reaction and Opening Ceremony Details

The IOC's response to the Russian flag incident was unequivocal. The Committee has prohibited Russian flags from being brought into Olympic venues. In its statement, the IOC emphasized that spectators are expected to adhere to ticket sale conditions, and event staff will address any violations directly with the relevant ticket holders. The 2026 Winter Games opening ceremony was held across multiple Italian cities, including Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

At the San Siro stadium, the Ukrainian flag was carried by 21-year-old short track speed skater Yelyzaveta Sydorenko, an Olympic debutant whose father serves in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Ukrainian flag bearer was Vladyslav Heraskevych, the first Ukrainian skeleton athlete in Olympic history. This incident occurs against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has led to strict neutrality conditions for Russian and Belarusian athletes at these Games.

"I did not expect that I would be entrusted with carrying the flag of Ukraine at such an important event," said Yelyzaveta Sydorenko.

The flag controversy highlights the complex political tensions surrounding Russian participation in international sport. The ban on Russian flags is part of broader measures aimed at upholding principles of neutrality and fairness in Olympic competition. Meanwhile, the participation of Ukrainian athletes like Sydorenko underscores the profound significance of national representation on the world stage, serving as a point of pride for their country during a period of conflict.
